Psychotropic medication
Psychotropic medication refer to all prescription medication with a predictable altering of brain- or mind function.
Psychotropics should always be prescribed or at least supervised by specialist Doctors such as Psychiatrists or Neurologists.
Sometimes the public perception is that anyone can propose Psychotropics for instance in the case of sleep-, calming-, mood- or even stimulant medication such as for ADHD. However, serious consequences often follow such as life-threatening side-effects, worsening of conditions or risk elements such as overdose or suicidality.
But in the right hands Psychotropics are perhaps the most impactful group of medicine in all of health science, with remarkable efficacy potentially on offer.
Psychotropics are also perhaps the largest group of medication and include calming agents, sedatives, sleep medication, anti-depressants, anxiolytics, mood-stabilizers, anti-psychotics, cognitive enhancers, medication for attention deficit disorder (ADD), various chemicals aiding addiction, help with abnormal movements, or for specific illnesses such as anti-epileptics, Parkinson's disease modifiers, and many more.
NEUROCARE has built a reputation for applying psychotropic medication efficiently, responsibly and sparingly.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is described as the treatment of mental health conditions by talking with a trained professional.
The human mind is well recognized to respond positively to empathy from another, to be understood, to be listened to even if no solutions are forthcoming, and perhaps more importantly to be part of a collaborative discussion as to the best way forward.
Initially Supportive Therapy was the norm whereby a person in need of mental health support would simply receive help by way of being heard, whilst some effort to be understood was followed by notions of empathy.
Further to the famous animal experiments of Pavlov Psychotherapy progressed to add so-called Behavioral interventions which simplistically promoted reward and punitive measures as tools for behavioural modification. Here the essential motivation stemmed from influences from the world outside of the individual.
Later the focus fell on the subconscious but internal motivators as described mainly by Freud and referred to as Psychoanalytical Therapy.
The Humanistic movement considered important internal motivational drives to which the individual was fully aware of such as self-actualization and the achievement or failure of personal growth.
Modern strategies included the individual's thoughts as the pivotal consideration. Thinking errors led to catastrophe whilst the successful achievement of a functional impulse-consequential thought approach generally is promoted - the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) era dawned.
More recently various CBT sub-types became fashionable such as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) which focus primarily on achieving improved interpersonal relationships by managing emotions more successfully.
A skilled Psychotherapist would normally make use of all of these strategies pending on the specific needs of the individual as no two people are alike and neither are their mental health crises. An individualized strategy is required in all instances.
The bulk of Psychotherapeutic intervention would be achieved on an individual therapy basis. However, couples-, family- and group therapy should always be considered in order to facilitate systemic improvement.
In closing it is always worth while remembering that Psychotherapy should be applied at the right time, with specific goals in mind, and with the aim to move people forward in life.
