Sleep is generally speaking an under-estimated critical function!
Abnormal or sub-optimal sleep often contributes to ill health both physically and mentally. It is hard to argue against the fact that sleep deprivation often leads to catastrophe such as motor-vehicle accidents (MVA), lack of concentration and consequential troubles at school or work, irritability and relationship difficulties and the list goes on.
More recently the focus has fallen on the overwhelming evidence that pathological sleep disorders lead to many different physical illnesses such as cardiac and respiratory disease from sleep apnoea, or even accelerated dementia.
Mental health complications such as depression, anxiety, memory disorders, agitation, even aggression have all been repeatedly confirmed by research.
Sleep pathology includes a wide range of disorders affecting the quality, duration and timing of sleep in general.
As such sleep pathologies is categorized into six major groups:
Historically Neurologists, Psychiatrists and Pulmonologists have shared an interest in sleep pathology.
Neurologists applied EEG investigation and managed to demonstrate the five distinct patterns of brain waves during sleep (phase 1-4, REM sleep), and quantified parameters of ideal accordingly.
Pulmonologists demonstrated the clear health risks of developing obstructive sleep apnoea in terms of both cardiological- and pulmonological correlations.
However, apart from the obvious application of CPAP devices for obstructive sleep apnoea, historically the treatment of sleep disorders became the responsibility of Psychiatry simply because the range of medication applicable is almost exclusively within the domain of Psychotropics.
Psychiatrists furthermore demonstrated the many different mental health conditions associated with sleep disturbance such as increased rates and severity of depression, significant anxiety syndromes, worsening of several cognitive aspects, even a clear increase in dementia risk, to name but a few.
Psychotropics in addition to better sleep routine, improved general health management and effective stress management strategies collectively has proven effective in the successful treatment of sleep pathology.
At NEUROCARE we therefore focus on multi-dimensional comprehensive strategies when treating sleep pathology.
Our Neurologists conduct proper Neurological sleep studies aiding in precision diagnosis.
Our specialist Psychiatrists prescribe only responsible medication combinations which is not only effective but also stays clear of complications such as medication side-effects and addiction.
Our Psychologists enable healthier living and improved stress-management strategies.
Not only do we provide cost-effective regular monitoring, but all Patients also benefit from our multi-disciplinary approach across all the conditions we focus on.
