Bonsai on show - June 2025
Winter has finally arrived with spectacular leaves falling to the ground, the first drops of rain, fireplaces being lit, and red wine flowing.
For bonsai-crafstmen leave-less trees are an inspiration: nature literally showcasing how it should be done! Now is the perfect time to reassess branch structure, balance and over-all shape.
This month's display include some leave-less trees to illustrate the beauty of unobscured structure, whilst some species spring into growth in winter such as ficus.

Transvaal Privot
This tree started out as a gift from Terry Erasmus, renowned bonsai master, after he saved it from a neglected collection. It was deemed worthless by us both for a long time.
Chines bonsai often depict family structures: a few years on this is a special Mother - Children depiction! Note how she protectively bow over her young...

Originally developed by Rudy Adam, it now boasts an excellent outline, and find itself in a much improved general health status. It has been a privilege saving this treasure.

One of a series of three Japanese Maple forests showcasing the magnificent leaves of this species as they progress through the seasons. Notice how they turn from green, to yellow, to red.
An overall triangular structure and a technical display of how to achieve depth perception further enhance this display...

Ficus
Another rescue tree, this time from Plettenberg Bay. A beautiful Ficus who started life with no branches of note, today boasting an expansive growth pattern, a beautiful trunk and a vigor for life!
I intend to show this tree annually for all to share in it's progress. Never leave a tree to die - do pass it on to someone keen to help.

Chinese Maple
Another classic Chines Maple, this time a smallish tree with an exceptionally attractive trunk.
A well developed branch structure, and good adherence to the scalene triangular concept makes this tree an excellent example of critical basic design. |

Ficus
The last of the rescue trees which seems to dominate this month's display. Clearly now rejuvenated, this happy Ficus is fast developing to be a prize bonsai.
A notable shortfalls is a crown that that needs further development; however, what it lacks on top it makes up with a strong root system and footing!

Ficus
Considered a classic Ficus Burtt Davyi. This particular sub-species make for spectacular bonsai.
Note the sense of balance despite the semi-slanting trunk, complimented by a wonderfully symmetrical root structure. Such a special species to work with!

Chinese Maple
What makes this tree stricking is the exceptionally thick trunk, good taper thereof, and the foliage that change with the seasons.
This example demonstrates the variety of styles Chinese Maples has to offer. Originated by Rudy Adams, and then handed to me for further development makes this tree very personal to me.

Highlights - May 2025
Autumn is arguably the most spectacular season considering the most wonderful colour display nature spoils us with! Some bonsai turn yellow, others even red, but each excites even if only with a clear statement of change.
These were some of the highlights from May:
